Black Mirror Magic: A Sampling of Practical Workings

Black mirror magic is a specialty that demands substantial technical expertise from the outset. Once the basic scrying skill is mastered, however, most practical applications are a basic matter of sufficient preparation. The following examples provide the specific preparations necessary to elaborate the black mirror facial reflection-distortion technique into complete magic workings of various types. Moreover, together these examples model how well-designed black mirror magic workings are structured, thereby teaching how to develop novel applications of your own.  The following applications assume that the basic Facial Reflection-Distortion Technique has been practiced to proficiency.

Applied Black Mirror Magic

  1. Divination

One of the most common applications of the magic mirror in folklore is as a divinatory device, employed to gain insight into the unseen dynamics in and around a specific situation. If you have, say, a court case pending, a workplace issue, a business arrangement, etc, the black mirror can become a window with a view beyond the apparent, beneath the surface.

Folk tale imagery suggest that one simply looks into the mirror, asks a question, and waits to see/hear an answer. That imagery suggests that the magic lies within the mirror itself, but in fact the mirror is a simple tool that must be wielded properly to gain the desired outcome: intelligence in this case.  In practice simply looking into a mirror and concentrating on a question too often prove ineffective. It’s no wonder early-stage practitioners become frustrated and discouraged with black mirror magic.

The following  instructions detail a technique that is quite effective, and will work for virtually anyone who applies it well. Like all magical techniques, however, the steps required to make it work are considerably easier to describe than they are to accomplish. The most difficult of these steps, however, generalize well to many magical techniques, with or without a black mirror, so learning this technique is has both specific and general value.

Black Mirror Divination

This method is not a quick, extemporaneous means of gaining insight into a short-term, immediately pressing problems. Other forms of divination are better for that. This technique requires at least a couple of days of significant preparatory work, but the type of information that becomes available tends to be highly specific and detailed. When facing a substantial issue with long-term consequences, this approach is often worth the effort.

Preliminary Work
  1. For a day or two prior to the working, think about the primary question often. Pay particular attention to your feelings when you think about the relevant issues that are known to you. If you find yourself musing about potential solutions, redirect your thoughts to the problem itself, and how you feel about it. The Focal Meditation technique is designed specifically to develop that skill.  Also, try to avoid thinking about why things are the way they are, how things got to be this way, etc. Instead, structure your thoughts in a purely descriptive manner. You may find some help with that in the Developmental Journaling method.
  2. Make a pictorial representation of the question. There are any number of ways to do this. The instruction on Sigils and Seals provides two good methods for creating personal symbols, and is strongly recommended here.
On the Day of the Working
  1. Refrain from eating or drinking except for moderate water intake as needed, for about 6 hours prior to the working, unless you have a medical reason to eat more frequently than that. If so, simply avoid doing the working on a full stomach.
  2. Set up your scrying area according to your usual custom, preparing to establish the usually lighting conditions, etc. Include an image of the question symbol unless you can reproduce it from memory. Also have a grease pencil or small paintbrush and some oil at hand, to apply to the symbol to the mirror surface during the working.
  3. At the outset of the working, establish a magical space about your scrying area. The basic Spell Casting procedure is recommended, but any well-practiced method should work as well.
  4. Once your space is charged and ready, draw the symbol of your question onto the mirror surface
  5. Clear your mind to prepare for the scrying.  Even clear your thoughts of the question at hand. If the Focal Meditation technique is well-practiced, you can use it to focus on a neutral concept, like Peace or Calm.  When extraneous thoughts or the question come to mind, let them go unattended.
  6. Begin the gaze.
  7.  Once your face begins to morph, let inspiration be your guide on how to proceed. You may passively observe, formulate questions in your mind, try to direct the imagery toward something specific. There’s no wrong action here so long as the scrying event is ongoing.
  8. If the scrying state is interrupted and you feel unsatisfied with the results so far, restart your gazing.
  9. Continue until you feel satisfied, then end the gazing session according to your custom.
  10. Follow the your normal closing procure to end the working.
Immediately After the Working
  1.  Write down everything you can remember from the working as soon as possible. Use the Developmental Journaling method. In any event, simply describe what you experienced in factual terms, without interpretation or inferences about what any of it means. It is not important in this moment to articulate a solution to the problem or an answer to the question. While this may feel unnatural at first, and resisting the urge to voice an answer is critical to this technique. Describe what happened and leave it at that.
  2. Have a little something to eat, then engage yourself in something else. Avoid ruminating over the events of the operation as best you can.
In the Days and Weeks to Follow

The answer to the question or solution to the problem won’t often be found in your thoughts and feelings about the working. You’ll recognize the answers/solutions in ongoing events as they unfold. You’ll find yourself recognizing opportunities to take advantage of, and rather naturally responding to events in ways that drive the process toward your liking.

Past Life Exploration

There is some evidence of a Hindu tradition of using mirrors as a means of examining past lives. The practice in every case is intended to help a person understand the life they’re currently living, the better to live it. Whether or not this is a traditional use of mirrors in the East, modern black mirror scrying is perfectly suited for this general purpose, and can be employed by anyone, regardless of beliefs about Hindu concepts of reincarnation and Karma. That is, past life experiences are a relatively common report in various cultures throughout recorded history.

It’s fairly common today too, coming in various forms, sometimes sought after but sometimes unbidden. We can therefore assume that past life experience lies within the normal range of human capacity. The key question is, will the experience be useful? For people who seek it out, the simple answer is often yes. This general rule of thumb applies to many of the things people do: if you seek after meaningful experiences, chances are you’ll have them.

Black Mirror Past Life Regression

Decide when you’re going to perform the operation, with at least 5 days to do the advance work.

Preliminary Work

On the days leading up to the operation, take some time out to review the major events of your life, according to the following procedure:

  1. Get into a comfortable position, take a few deep, cleansing breaths, and relax.
  2. Start with the strongest memories you have of the previous few months. Bring your memories to mind and ruminate on them enough to bring in a good deal of detail. Pay particular attention to how you felt at the time about the events you’re remembering, as they unfolded. When you’re satisfied with your present review, take in a deep breath and as you exhale, slip back in time by a couple of years.
  3. Again review the strongest memories you have of the epoch. Bring in a good amount of detail and again focus on how you felt about the events you’re recalling, as they happened back then. When satisfied, take in a deep breath and as you exhale, slip back in time a few years more.
  4. Repeat the above procedure, recalling your strongest memories for the time period you’re focused on, and attending to your feelings back them. Each time, when your ready to move again, take in a deep breath and slip back in time as you exhale.
  5. Continue until you reach some of your earliest childhood memories. When you’re satisfied with this review, let your memory run in fast-forward to the present moment. Move a little, gradually working up to a gentle stretch (you’ll need it).
  6. End the session by having a little something to eat.

Note the italicized phrase, slip back in time in the above instructions. Be mindful of how that feels each time you do it. Over the course of engaging in this process for 5+ days running, a major goal is to develop a unique and identifiable feeling of slipping back in time to previous epochs of your life. You don’t have to fake it. Simply set your mind to that goal and engage in the process described above for 5 or more days in a row. What is intended to happen will naturally happen.

On the Day of the Operation
  1.  Set up your work area as usual.
  2. Establish magical space using the Spell Casting procedure or other customary method.
  3.  Begin your gazing sessions as usual.
  4. When your face begins to morph, make an effort to see yourself as you are now. Don’t be surprised to find that it’s somewhat difficult to keep an image that closely resembles your current reflection in a normal mirror. It isn’t necessary to keep a crisp or stable image in that form. Rather, assume that morphing flashes of various features reflect undercurrents in your current life.
  5. When you feel comfortable with the image of your current self, let your mind wander to recent memories, letting the image morph however it does.
  6.  Without waiting for much detail to develop, take in a deep breath and slip back in time as you exhale, just as you did in your preliminary work. Again don’t wait for a lot of detail to develop. Take in a deep breath and slip back in time as you exhale.
  7. Repeat the process until you reach your earliest childhood memories. Take in a deep breath and slip back in time as you exhale.
  8. The next thing you see in the mirror will represent your most recent past life. Spend as much time as you like to explore it.
  9.  When you’re satisfied, run your memories on fast forward to the present, then end your gazing session according to your custom.
  10. Follow your normal closing procedure to end the working.
After a month or more, the operation can be repeated in the same fashion, continuing on from the memories of your most recent past life and then slipping back in time to an earlier incarnation. Thereafter, use the technique at will as inspiration dictates.

Spirit Communication

The black mirror technique related in the black mirror scrying instruction was initially developed as an aid for Goetic evocation by Carroll “Poke” Runyon and Nelson White. That particular form of magic is too intricate and expansive to address here, but the reader is encouraged to research it in service of a well-rounded education. That as it may be, the basic black mirror technique generalizes well to spirit communication of any sort. The following procedure is readily adapted to more specific aims as inspiration dictates.

On the Nature of Spirits

Just as the past life work described above can be valuable no matter what one believed about reincarnation, so too can spirit work be of good use regardless of specific beliefs. Even full disbelief that spirit beings even exist doesn’t preclude a valuable experience from the effort. The simple fact of the matter is, like past life experiences, spirit phenomenon is within the normal human perceptual range. It therefore stands to reason that anyone can have experiences  of that type under certain circumstances. What’s more, that we can have it doesn’t explain why or what it means. We each have to decide that for ourselves.

One thing the following procedures do is to promote circumstances that can facilitate the experience of interactive spirit beings. They can say and do unexpected and surprising things. The general procedures below are applicable to most any type of spirit work. A couple of specific variations are noted at the end of the article.

A General Spirit Communication Procedure
Preliminary Work
  1. At least a few days prior to a planned working, create a Seal to represent the targeted spirit, using one of the Zodiacal method described in the Sigils and Seals instruction, or other preferred method.  If a name is known, use the name as the basis of the Seal. If no name is known, devise the most concise statement of function you can (try to limit it to no more than two or three words at most) and use that as the basis of the seal.
  2. Spend the days running up to the operation contemplating the Seal and thinking about the nature of the spirit, as much as you understand it. If you know nothing of the nature of the spirit, instead contemplate what you hope to gain by the communion. Use the focal meditation or a comparable method for these contemplations.
On the Day of the Operation
  1.  Avoiding eating and drinking for about 6 hours prior to the operations, within your normal health limits.
  2. Set up your equipment as usual. Include a grease pencil or small painbrush and some oil to apply the Seal to surface of the black mirror.
  3. Establish magical space using the Spell Casting procedure or other customary method.
  4. Apply the seal onto the mirror surface.
  5. Begin your gazing session as usual.
  6. Once the morphing starts, bring the seal to mind and focus on it to the exclusion of all else (i.e. focal meditation).
  7. Once you feel contact has been made, what you do is largely a matter of inspiration or intent. You may formulate questions in your mind. Answers may come in the form of verbal-like communication or images in the mirror, etc. While some people report hearing an audible voice during this kind of procedure, many if not most report that verbal-like communication is primarily an “inner-voice” phenomenon.  Your mileage may vary.
  8. Alternatively or in addition, you may direct the spirit to aid you with your magical goals, etc. Any number of other things are possible, so keep an open mind, and if inspired during the session, the best thing to do is to go with it.
  9. When satisfied that you have accomplished as much as you can, it’s customary to thank the spirit and bid it farewell. Intentionally sharpen your the focus of your vision and you will once again see a clearer reflection of your own face
  10. Carry out your usual closing procedure to end the working.
Immediately After the Working
  1.  Write down everything you can remember from the working as soon as possible. Use the Developmental Journaling method. In any event, simply describe what you experienced in factual terms, without interpretation or inferences about what any of it means.
  2. Have a little something to eat, then engage yourself in something else. Avoid ruminating over the events of the operation as best you can.

Select Variations

Animal and Other Nature Spirits

One application of this technique is to contact a personal animal spirit, a Totem Animal, etc. Other nature spirits, such as the Spirit of Rain, the Spirit of Oak (or the Spirit of a particular medicinal plant)… even the Spirit of ones own garden may be evoked. A Seal may be made of words like, OAK SPIRIT, or MY GARDEN, etc. Follow the basic procedures described above, but in the days or even weeks prior to the working, spend time thinking about the target object/concept, and if possible, in physical contact with it. Because the target in this case relates to natural phenomena, a good deal of information will be available. So do as much relevant research as possible into the nature of the subject of interest. Finally, spend some meditative time imagining that you are the thing in question, or that you are directly participating in it. Then, when the time comes to do the operation, recall how you felt as the thing in question while developing the summoning attitude.

Ancestral Spirits

Many traditions seek to draw guidance and wisdom from ancestral spirits. To prepare for this sort of operation, contemplate the evolution of your people, and/or your family as is appropriate to your goals. Study relevant histories and folklore, make a genealogy chart, etc…. generally engross yourself in your origins as much as possible. Spend at least a few meditative sessions imagining what life was like for your ancestors, how they lived, the challenges they faced, the obstacles they overcame, and even their failures where they are known. Pay particular attention to the feelings you develop as you imagine yourself as one of your own ancestors. And when the time comes to do the operation, engulf yourself in those feelings as you summon them.

Family and Friends that have Died

There are many reasons that people seek to commune with those who have passed away ahead of us: advice, wisdom, resolution of unfinished business, etc. Whatever the goal, the basic preparation is the same: spend time imagining the person as they were, and as you knew them. Start by recalling their face, then the rest of their body, their posture, their mannerisms. Recall the sound of their voice and common phrases that would say. And most importantly, remember events you shared with the person, and especially remember how you felt, about yourself and about everything else, when you were around them. Be as honest about it as you can be, neither romanticizing nor demonizing them. Don’t shy away from negative memories or feelings if they were part of your experience of the person when they were alive but take care to avoid exaggerating them, etc. Make a Seal using their name as the basis, and do the operation when you feel you’ve sufficiently reviewed their life and how their life related to yours. When it’s time to summon them, focus especially on the feelings that came up during your contemplations.
