Magick is the highest, most Absolute, most Divine Knowledge of natural Philosophy, advanced in its works and wonderful operations by a right understanding of the inward and occult virtue of things; so that true agents being applied to proper patients, strange and admirable effects will thereby be produced. Whence magicians are profound and diligent searchers into Nature; they, because of their skill, know how to anticipate an effort (or effect), the which to the vulgar shall seem to be a miracle.

A fundamental presumption of the Magician’s Zodiac system is that everything the magician needs to learn and know is encoded in the nature of the world in which the magician lives. That concept is consistent with the passage, whence magicians are profound and diligent searchers into Nature; they because of their skill, know how to anticipate an effort (or effect). The passage also alludes to the basis of magick and magical effects, as the magician’s intuitive understanding and responding to the circumstances they face and would change by magical means.

The Development of Elemental Awareness instructions lays out a practical path for establishing the basis of magically relevant intuitive understanding and responding. The instruction also suggests that the Central Glyph of the system can be used to pace the developmental work. The current instruction extends the previous instruction in a dimensional fashion, focusing attention to the outer and inner cycles of lightness and darkness, and adding to the daily developmental routine in a manner that directly reflects them.

The Outer and Inner Cycles

The Outer Cycle of Lightness and Darkness in nature refers to the Seasonal progression, the steady increase of daylight hours from the equipotent moment of the Spring Equinox to the maximum daylight hours at the Summer Solstice. Light hours then decrease to the equipotent moment of the Autumnal Equinox, followed by the steady increase in nighttime hours till they peak at the Winter Solstice, then steadily diminishing till the next equipotent moment at the Spring Equinox. The Outer Cycle is reflected in the Central Glyph of the system as the outer Symbols representing the Equinoxes and Solstices.

The Inner Cycle of Lightness and Darkness in nature refers to the steady increasing in intensity of daylight from the sunrise to the solar zenith, it’s diminishing intensity from zenith to sunset, and its corresponding (poetic) rise, peak, and fall of intensity of darkness progressing from sunset to zenith to sunrise.

As shown, the Elements cycle runs: Air, Fire, Water, Earth, Air…, etc. for both the outer and the inner cycles. As suggested in the Development of Elemental Awareness instruction, the progressive seasons bounded by the Equinoxes and Solstices provide a suitable pacing strategy for focused Elemental work (Spring – Air, Summer – Fire, Autumn – Water, Winter – Earth). The daily cycle of lightness and darkness also provide suitable pacing (Morning – Air, Afternoon – Fire, Evening – Water, Night – Earth), and when combined naturally encodes the dimensional nature of the system.

The idea is that during initial development within the system (the first year), the overarching focus during Spring is Elemental Air. However, the focus of the morning hours is also Elemental Air, during the afternoon the focus is Fire, during the evening it’s Water, and during the night it’s Earth. The combination of Outer and Inner cycle attributes results in the system of Elemental Awareness commonly expressed as an Element of Element scheme. The following table establishes the full pattern of possibilities:

Spring + Morning = Air of Air
Spring + Afternoon= Fire of Air
Spring + Evening = Water of Air
Spring + Night = Earth of Air

Summer + Morning = Air of Fire
Summer + Afternoon = Fire of Fire
Summer + Evening = Water of Fire
Summer + Night = Earth of Fire

Autumn + Morning = Air of Water
Autumn + Afternoon = Fire of Water
Autumn + Evening = Water of Water
Autumn + Night = Earth of Water

Winter + Morning = Air of Earth
Winter + Afternoon = Fire of Earth
Winter + Evening = Water of Earth
Winter + Night = Earth of Earth

The practical approach to encoding these dimensional dynamics is to carry out the developmental plan established in the Development of Elemental Awareness instruction as representative of the Outer Cycle of Lightness and Darkness, wherein each Element is addressed for its entire Season on a daily basis. To the Seasonal program, add the following simple practice to the daily routine. The observance below is loosely based on Crowley’s Solar Adorations and is representative of the Inner Cycle of Lightness and Darkness.

  1. About Sunrise or upon waking in the morning, face an Easterly direction, and establish a basic meditative mindset while reflecting on the poetic connotations of Sunrise and Morning. Make a note any ideas or images that come to mind that seem to be worthy of noting.
  2. About Midday, face a Southerly direction, establish a basic meditative mindset while reflecting on the poetic connotations of Midday and Afternoon. Make a note any ideas or images that come to mind that seem to be worthy of noting.
  3. About Sunset, face a Westerly direction, and establish a basic meditative mindset while reflecting on the poetic connotations of Sunset and Evening. Make a note any ideas or images that come to mind that seem to be worthy of noting.
  4. About Midnight or just before retiring for the night, face a Northerly direction, and establish a basic meditative mindset while reflecting on the poetic connotations of Midnight and Night. Make a note any ideas or images that come to mind that seem to be worthy of noting.

Note that the literal directions and precise timing are not critical to these brief observances. The most important thing is to cycle through each one every day during initial development (i.e. the first year).
